It May Be Worth Holding Off Applying For Any Amex Delta SkyMiles Business Cards

Yesterday morning, a PR agency that works for Amex told me that we would be seeing increased welcome bonuses on three of Amex’s four consumer SkyMiles cards and that the welcome bonuses on the business cards would be increasing as well. Well, the consumer cards have all now had their bonuses boosted but there’s no sign of the increased offers on the business cards…yet.

As things stand, these are the welcome offers that I can see for the Delta SkyMiles business cards on the Amex website:

  • Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card – 50,000 miles & a $50 statement credit after spending $2,000 in the first three months.
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card – 60,000 miles, 5,000 MQM & a $100 statement credit after spending $3,000 in the first three months.
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card – 60,000 miles, 10,000 MQM & a $100 statement credit after spending $4,000 in the first three months.

The information I was given by the PR agency yesterday suggested that the new welcome offers would look like this:

  • Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card – 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months of card membership & a $200 statement credit after making a single Delta purchase in the first 3 months of card membership.
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card – 95,000 miles after spending $5,000 in the first 3 months of card membership & a $200 statement credit after making a single Delta purchase in the first 3 months of card membership.
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card – 85,000 miles & 20,000 MQM after spending $6,000 in the first 3 months of card membership & a $200 statement credit after making a single Delta purchase in the first 3 months of card membership.

The information I was given wasn’t embargoed (I was asked to write about it!) and it suggested that the new welcome offers on the Delta SkyMiles business cards would be valid from yesterday through to 28 July just like the offers on the consumer cards. For whatever reason, the new business card offers don’t appear to have gone live.

As it seems unlikely that Amex’s PR agency would have such specific information on the new welcome bonuses for the SkyMiles business cards if those welcome bonuses weren’t in the pipeline, it may be that Amex has been hit with an unexpected delay and that we’ll be seeing these improved bonuses appear online in the next few days.

Bottom Line

If I was in the market for a Delta SkyMiles Business Card, I would hold off from applying right now and wait to see what happens in the coming days. While the spending requirements to earn the new welcome bonuses look like they will be noticeably higher than they are now (assuming the information from the PR agency is correct), the increased number of SkyMiles on offer and the improved (and very easy to earn) statement credits should make that worthwhile.
