IHG Rewards (the rewards program for, amongst others, InterContinental Hotels and Holiday Inn) has released the list of hotels that are participating in the latest PointBreaks promotion and bookings are now being taken.

“PointBreaks” are one of the better and more popular hotel promotions that you’ll find, with IHG opening up rooms at a number of its hotels for just 5,000 points per night – these are rooms that could go for as much as 40,000 points per night outside of the PointBreaks period.

For those new to PointBreaks, don’t get too excited.  You’re not going to be spending two weeks on a beach in Bora Bora for 5,000 points/night. The luxurious and high demand hotels in the IHG portfolio rarely appear on the PointBreaks list and this time is no different – there’s only one InterContinental hotel participating in the promotion this time around and it’s in Egypt.

Having said all that, there is still good value to be had out of some of these hotels – especially if a hotel on the list happens to be somewhere you were planning to visit anyway. That’s when this promotion comes into its own.

The booking period for this promotion is open from today (26 October) for reservation from 26 October through 31 January 2016.

An important restriction to bear in mind is that you can only make 2 reservations per hotel during the PointBreaks offer period. This is a relatively recent rule brought in by IHG Rewards in an attempt to prevent guests making numerous speculative bookings before their plans firm up and they then cancel all the ones they no longer need (and denying other IHG Rewards members the inventory).

With all that said, here is the list by region and country:

To be honest there’s nothing really jumping out at me that screams “great deal!” but there are a number of airport hotels included in the promotion that could be useful for some people. The one that stands out is the Holiday Inn Helsinki Vantaa Airport which could come in useful for anyone making the most of some of Finnair’s good business class fares to Asia and the US.

Like I said at the beginning, if you happen to be planning to visit one of these properties anyway the PointBreaks deal could be a valuable option but, otherwise, I don’t see anything to tempt me. That’s how it is with these PointBreaks promotions – most of the time the offerings are quite bland and unappealing (at least to me)….but every now and again you’ll find a gem and that what keeps me interested every time a new PointBreaks list is released.
