OneMileAtATime has details of what appears to be an upcoming promotion from Hyatt that will allow guests to earn up to 75,000 Hyatt Gold Rewards Points. There has been no confirmation of this promotion, as yet, from Hyatt but the images of the promotional images that Lucky has been given look plausible enough to me.

Hyatt “Stay More Play More” 2016

The promotion is called “Stay More Play More” and is set to run between 1 April and 30 June 2016. This isn’t the first time Hyatt has run a promotion with this name (the last one ran from January through April  in 2015) and this promotion appears to have been designed on similar lines.

The promotion is simple and is predicated on the fact that you get more Hyatt Gold Passport (HGP) Bonus Points to more nights you stay during the promotional period:

  • Stay 5 nights – Earn 5,000 Bonus HGP Points
  • Stay 10 nights – Earn 15,000 Bonus HGP Points
  • Stay 15 nights – Earn 30,000 Bonus HGP Points
  • Stay 20 nights – Earn 50,000 Bonus HGP Points
  • Stay 25 nights – Earn 75,000 Bonus HGP Points

Registration is now open and is available via Hyatt.com/StayMorePlayMore Promotion Now Closed)

At the risk of stating the obvious (but someone has asked this question elsewhere!), no, the nights do not have to be concurrent – you can take as many stays as you like to build up your total number of nights as long as they fall within the promotional period.

Also, Hyatt Points & Cash bookings are expected to qualify for this promotion. Hyatt treats Points & Cash  bookings in a similar way to bookings made entirely with cash (they earn Hyatt Gold Passport points and can be upgraded) so there’s every reason to believe that they’ll count towards the Stay More Play More promotion.

How Good Is The “Stay More Play More” Promotion?

Assuming the details we have are correct I’m not overly excited about Stay More Play More.

If you’re a person who travels a lot for business or just happen to have a vacation booked that coincides with the promotion dates then you could earn a good few Hyatt Gold Passport points but, for the rest of us, it doesn’t seem that enticing.

The promotion spans 91 days and, to earn the maximum bonus, you’d have to spend 25 of those at Hyatt properties…..and that’s a big ask for someone who doesn’t travel for a living and pays for their hotel stays out of their own pocket. That’s not a criticism of the promotion (Hyatt can target its promotions at whatever demographic it chooses), I’m just pointing out the reality for most people who read this blog.

Hyatt’s Award Chart looks like this:

So, 5 nights at Hyatt properties during the promotional period, would earn you enough Gold Passport points for a free night at a Category 1 property…that’s not very enticing.

10 nights, would get you 3 free nights at a Category 1 property (at the low end) or 1 free night at a Category 4 property (at the top end).

I would suggest that, for those not traveling on Business, this may be the sweet spot of the promotion. 10 nights isn’t too hard to achieve over a period of 3 months and Hyatt has some very nice Category 4 properties.

You could, of course, use any points you earn through this promotion for Points & Cash awards:

10 nights during the promotional period would earn you enough points for a Points & Cash award at any Hyatt property in the world…and there are some nice ones out there! But it’s still only one night and you’d still have to pay the cash element of the stay (which also comes with taxes).

I value Hyatt Gold Passport Points somewhere around 1.4 cents each so 10 nights, which earns 15,000 points, would net an effective rebate of $210 or $21/night and that’s not enough of an incentive to make me book more Hyatt stays or to get me to move any stays I have at other hotels over to Hyatt.

If, however, you’re a road warrior and spend more time in hotel rooms than you do at home (and you have my sympathies if you do…I have no idea how you do it) then the 25 night target is probably very doable for you and then the math starts to look a bit more interesting.

Not only would 75,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points be enough for a weekend at any Hyatt in the world it would also be enough for a long weekend at any Hyatt Category 6 property too…and that’s not bad at all.

Bottom Line

How you view this promotion will depend on you travel patterns. If you’re a leisure traveler who happens to be a fan of Hyatt, I don’t think there’s that much here to tempt you to book any stays you weren’t going to be making anyway.

If, on the other hand, you travel a lot anyway then this may be enough to get you to move some stays over to Hyatt. If you’re going to be away from home for 25 nights anyway you may as well get something out of it and 3 nights on Kauai sounds like quite a nice break.
