One of the biggest issues a lot of miles & points fans have with Hyatt is that it doesn’t exactly have a large footprint of properties across the world. This makes it hard to be loyal to the chain (and earn status) and it means that World of Hyatt points are harder to use than the currencies issued by the other major hoteliers….but Hyatt is trying to do something about this.

Hyatt has been making more of an effort to add properties to its portfolio over the past couple of years and the recent tie-up with Small Luxury Hotels of the World has certainly boosted the hotelier’s offering so things are improving…and now we have a new Hyatt in Barcelona.

Hyatt has announced that it has signed the Hotel SOFIA Barcelona to its Unbound Collection (Hyatt’s brand designed to offer “upper-upscale” and luxury boutique properties).

The property has just undergone an extensive refurbishment project and, based on the images I’ve seen, looks to be a very modern property located in the heart of Barcelona.

Here’ what the SOFIA offers:

  • 465 renovated guest rooms
  • 18 suites
  • 5 dining/drinking options:
    • IMPAR – Mediterranean fusion cuisine
    • Sofia Be So – an intimate luxury restaurant serving traditional local dishes
    • Sofia Bar – For coffee or cocktails
    • Philosofia – the hotel’s own bakery where everything is made fresh daily
    • Zuu – an entertainment venue offering dining and shows
  • SOFIA Oasis Wellness & Spa
  • Tropical garden pool
  • State-of-the-art fitness center.

The property’s suites offer great views of the city as well as giving guests access to the hotel’s “As You Wish” services which include amenities such as a 24-hour butler, welcome gifts and access to the Wish Lounge serving daily cocktails and a selection of local foods.

The SOFIA has been designated a Category 5 property by Hyatt which means that an award night costs 20,000 points and a suite will cost 32,000 points….

…and there seems to be plenty of availability right now.

…which are located between floors 1 and 6 and look out over Avenida Diagonal (a major Barcelona thoroughfare). A glass wall separates the two areas in the room which Hyatt says “gives way to a space that’s large, open, yet private”.

As this isn’t a brand new property (just a refurbished property Hyatt now manages) I’ve had a quick look on TripAdvisor to see what guest have been saying…and it looks promising.

Not bad…as long as those are genuine reviews:)

Bottom Line

Overall this looks like a promising new addition to the Hyatt portfolio…especially as this is the first Hyatt in Barcelona and, excluding the SLH properties, only the second Hyatt property in mainland Spain.

It’s always good to have new locations at which to spend World of Hyatt points (and, by extension, Chase Ultimate rewards points) and the SOFIA puts a check mark in that very important box…now I’ll be interested to see what the first reviews from Hyatt loyalists are like.

Anyone planning to try this property out?

  1. While I was hoping(somehow) that this property would be 15K points(Cat 4), at 20K that’s a pretty good redemption.
