In the last week, we have seen a number of hotel chains introducing new customer-friendly policies in the light of the ongoing worldwide crisis (Hyatt delaying its award chart devaluation has been my favorite so far) and, following on from Wednesday’s announcement that it’s freezing points expirations, reviewing elite status targets and expanding the number of destinations at which change/cancellation fees are waived, Hilton has just introduced another nice policy change.

In emails being sent out to Hilton Honors members with free night awards in their accounts, Hilton has said the following (HT: MilesTalk)

For all unexpired Weekend Night Rewards as of March 11, 2020, and all new ones issued until August 30, 2020, we are extending the expiration date through the end of next summer (August 31, 2021).

There is no need for you to do anything, as your certificate(s) are being automatically updated in our systems.

That’s a very nice move and improves on Marriott’s announcement on Friday in which it confirmed that its free night award certificates which are due to expire in 2020 would be valid through January 2021.

How To Earn Hilton Free Night Certificates

Hilton doesn’t generally offer free night certificates in its quarterly promotions so most people earn them through one of three Hilton/American Express credit cards:

Hilton Honors Surpass Card from American Express

  • Annual fee – $95
  • Welcome bonus – 125,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months of card membership.
  • Complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status
  • Earn a free weekend night reward after spending $15,000 on the card in a calendar year.

Bottom Line

This is a nice move from Hilton and one which will please a lot of people with Hilton Honors free weekend night rewards sitting in their accounts.

These Hilton certificates may be more generous than the certificates that are offered by various Marriott Bonvoy credit cards (because they can be used at any property) but the fact that they can only be used at weekends makes them considerably harder to use…and even more so when the world is on lockdown!

Giving Honors members the chance to use their certificates in the first 8 months 2021 rather than forcing them to somehow find a way to use them in 2020 (which may turn out to not even be possible) should ensure that a lot fewer Hilton free weekend night reward certificates go to waste.
