American Airlines and British Airways are currently offering a fantastic Business Class fare for travel between Gothenburg (Sweden) and Miami. This could be great for a vacation, a great way to lock in some much needed credit towards elite status or, if you book your flights carefully, a good way to earn some redeemable miles too.
Headline Fare Rules
- Bookings must be made by 31 December 2018
- Reservations must be made at least 21 days in advance
- A Saturday night stay is required
- Maximum stay is 12 months
- Stopovers are not permitted
- Accompanied infants/children with their own seat cost 75% of the adult fare
- Infants without their own seat cost 10% of the adult fare
Fare Availability
The fare makes its first appearance for a limited number of days in April (not that other dates in April also offer fares well under $2,000)…
….it disappears completely in May….
…..makes a comeback towards the end of June…..
…and is available on every single day of July….
…and August….
…but only lasts a few days into September (traditionally when business travel in Europe starts to pick up again):
Finding & Booking The Flights
I used the Matrix search tool to find these flights using the following parameters (as an example):
You should also be able to find these fares with ease via Google Flights.
Matrix may appear to suggest that the best fares are only available via American Airlines….
….but you’ll find these fares on AA.com….
…AND on BritishAirways.com too:
These fares really couldn’t be any easier to find.
Where To Credit The Flights And Who To Book With
Most readers will probably be members of American Airlines AAdvantage and the British Airways Executive Club so I’m going to focus on those two programs (you can use the wheretocredit.com tool to see all your options).
American Airlines AAdvantage
If you’re looking to credit these flights to the AAdvantage program you’re almost certainly going to be better off booking your flights through British Airways (even if you end up flying on American Airlines aircraft).
Booking through American or British Airways will see you earn 2 Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) per mile flown and each segment you fly will also count towards elite status…but that’s where the similarities end.
If you book through American Airlines you will earn redeemable miles bases on the cost of your fare (less taxes and fees) while booking through British Airways will see you earn redeemable miles based on the distance traveled.
Also, if you book through American Airlines you will earn Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQD) based on the fare while booking through BA will see you earn EQD at 25% of the distance travelled.
An Executive Platinum member booking these flights through American will earn the following:
But, the same member booking through British Airways (and crediting to AAdvantage) would see his/her earnings look like this:
- EQM – 20,308 (no change)
- Segments – 4 (no change)
- EQD – 2,545 (~116% more)
- Award Miles – 23,923 (~85% more)
The difference in AAdvantage earnings based on who you book with can be staggering so be VERY careful when deciding how to book your flights.
British Airways Executive Club
Things are considerably simpler for BAEC members as the only difference between booking through BA and booking through American is that elite status holders will earn more miles by booking through BA.
Bookings through AA and BA will both net 360 Tier Points for the whole trip but, as an example, a BA Gold member will earn 25,400 Avios by booking through BA while only earning 22,846 Avios by booking through American Airlines – booking through British Airways is the way to go.

Bottom Line
This is a very, very good Business Class fare for travel between Europe and Miami but it looks like it’s only going to be on offer for 12 days more.
To ensure you have the best seats available for this trip I suggest avoiding long-haul British Airways flight and focusing on long-haul flights operated by American Airlines (and its 777s) and I strongly suggest you work out the math before you decide which airline you book through – most people will do best by booking through BA.
