If you’re looking to book a trip to New York in the next few months there are some truly fantastic deals to be had if you have a bit of flexibility – and they’re not on Low Cost Carriers (LCCs).
There will be 2 Fare Alerts today so make sure you check back later by which time I will have had time to post the second one.
To ensure that you don’t miss any of the fare alerts posted on Travelling For Miles, subscribe to the daily email blast (just the one email) that contains links to all the day’s posts. The “subscribe box” is at the top of the right-hand-side sidebar on every page.
Back to the first of today’s fare alerts:
All fares shown here were found using the ITA Matrix search tool. For more info on using this tool check out the links on my “useful info” page.
The headline grabbing fare that I found was for $389/£250/€340 (return) in December on Icelandair (Matrix shows $384 but, for some reason, it prices to $389 on the Icelandair website).
And, while there aren’t exactly a ton of dates on which that fare is valid, the fares available on other dates aren’t terrible.
The flights on Icelandair originate and terminate in Oslo and route via Iceland (click to enlarge):
I confess to not knowing a great deal about Icelandair (despite the fact that it appears regularly when I’m searching for cheap flights between Europe and the US) but it doesn’t appear to be a LCC.
There are any number of fare types you can choose from….
….although you’ll need to select “Economy Class Special” if you’re looking for the cheapest fares:
Per the Icelandair baggage policy it looks like you get a checked bag included with the cost of the flight (perfect for NYC shopping)
And the website indicates that economy class passengers get complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, a personal IFE in the seat back in front of you and a selection of food and drinks for purchase (kids get a complimentary warm meal).
All that for $389/£254/€346 seems pretty good value for a trans-Atlantic flight.
What if you don’t want to fly Icelandair?
If you don’t feel like trying out Icelandair there are other options available to you – and one of the options came as a surprise to me:
British Airways have a great fare for travel originating in Oslo.
The Matrix search shows British Airways pricing out to $426/£277/€380….
Lots of availability for a great price…..but, for me, the more exciting fact is that you can get these fares in December….and even for Christmas in New York!
….and there’s not exactly a shortage of flight options on any given day:
For the sake of simplicity I’d choose the flights that depart and originate in Oslo but other flights may suit your purposes better.
If you head over to the British Airways website you’ll find that the flights price out in Norwegian Krone….
…but the price is still pretty much as quoted:
Compare the prices above to the prices available on British Airways from London for December…..
….and you’ll start to see that, not only are prices higher but they’re over double the price as you get closer to Christmas.
These British Airways fares from Europe to New York are available from October through to the middle of March 2016.
