Thoughts
The first and probably most important thing to point out is that the 40% discount is based on the best flexible rate which will almost certainly never be the cheapest rate that’s going. This means that if you’re someone who’s usually happy to book inflexible rates, the discount that’s on offer to you (when compared to the lowest rate that you may otherwise have booked) will not be anywhere near 40%.
Here’s an example of what I mean.
These are the room rates available on a randomly selected night at the Kimpton Everly Hotel in Los Angeles.
The sale rate is $196/night (excluding taxes and fees) while the cheapest non-sale rate is 283/night so in this example, the discount that someone who usually books an inflexible rate is being offered is ~31%. That’s still an excellent discount to be offered but I need to highlight that it isn’t 40%.
If you normally refuse to book anything other than flexible rates then in this example, Kimpton is offering you a discount of ~37%.
And that’s a genuine 37% saving and not a “headline” saving because unlike what we see in a lot of hotel sales that base their discounts on the best flexible rate, this sale rate is as flexible as the rate that it’s based on.
That’s excellent news for those of us who haven’t firmed up our plans but love the idea of a big discount on our next stay.
As far as availability goes, it’s a bit hit and miss in this sale.
The terms of the sale state that the minimum length of stay required to trigger the sale rate varies by property and that blackout dates vary by property but we’re not given any indication of what those parameters look like.
That makes it a little hard to know if a property has sold out its allocation of sale rate rooms, if the dates selected coincide with a blackout period, or if the length of stay chosen wasn’t long enough.
When I searched for availability on a random date in November for a stay in LA, all four of the city’s Kimpton properties appeared in the results.
When I searched Spain for late April, only one of the two Kimpton’s in the country was offering the sale rate (the new Kimpton in Mallorca).
And when I searched San Francisco for the same dates at the end of April, neither Kimpton property in the city would offer me the sale rate.
Clearly, your mileage will vary with this sale so you’ll just have to hope that your chosen property (or properties) will have the sale rates available on data that you can visit.
Bottom line
Kimpton has launched a 3-day flash sale in which it’s offering up to 40% off stays at its properties around the world. Most (possibly all) Kimpton properties appear to be participating and with the sale rate offering a very good amount of flexibility and with discounts towards the upper end of the promised maximum not too hard to find, there are some very good deals to be locked in as long as you can move quickly.
