TAP Air Portugal is currently offering a number of fantastic Business Class fares for travel to various European cities next year. The best fares that I’ve seen all seem to originate in either New York or Boston but there are one or two good deals available out of Chicago as well.

Good to know

  • All these fares are for travel in 2022
  • All fares require a stopover in Lisbon or Porto
  • The example fares that you’ll find in this post have been filtered to exclude routings that require more than one stop and routings that require an overnight stop. This means that cheaper fares may be available.
  • The cheapest fares may be fares offered by online travel sites and not TAP Air Portugal. I would always choose to pay a little more to book directly with the airline so I can avoid having to deal with a middleman if things go wrong, but that’s a personal choice and it’s up to individual travelers to choose what they’re most comfortable with.
  • If you plan to pay for a fare using the Platinum Card® from American Express, don’t forget that you’ll only earn 5 points/mile (terms apply) if you book directly with TAP.

Note: When considering which destination(s) to visit, make sure you check what the current entry rules are like and what the current situation in the country is like.

Example Fares

These fares have been taken from a broad range of dates and do not necessarily represent the cheapest fare available to any given destination – these are just examples of some of the great deals that are currently available.

Out of New York:

I’ve also seen sub-$2,000 fares for travel from New York to cities like Munich, Geneva, and Paris so it’s worth looking around if your preferred destination doesn’t appear in the examples above.

Out of Boston:

I’ve also seen sub-$2,000 fares for travel from Boston to cities like Milan, Prague, and Berlin so there are quite a few destinations to which TAP Air Portugal is currently offering great deals.

Pay attention to the aircraft you’re booking

When booking one of TAP’s transatlantic routes, the key to getting the very most out of your flight experience is to book flights operated by TAP’s Airbus A330-900neo aircraft which have a great Business Class cabin with excellent lie-flat seating.

You’ll find this aircraft operating out of both Boston and New York…

…but it looks like it’s easier to book this aircraft in the winter months than in the summer months.

If you don’t book the A330-900neo, you’ll probably be offered TAP’s narrow-body A321neo aircraft.

This aircraft also offers lie-flat seating in Business Class, but the cabin is considerably smaller than the cabin on the A330 and it doesn’t offer all-aisle-access seating for all passengers – this cabin is set out like JetBlue’s domestic Mint product and like the new Business Class cabin that Singapore Airlines unveiled for its 737s yesterday.

Don’t Forget

Make sure you get the best deal out of whatever fare you book by using a credit card that gives you a good return on your travel spending and, preferably, one that also comes with good travel protections.

The Platinum Card® from American Express (review) earns 5 points/dollar for spending made directly with airlines, the Business Platinum® Card from American Express earns 5 points/dollar for flights booked through Amex Travel, while the Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card (review) earns 3 points/dollar for just about all travel spending. Importantly, all three of these cards offer good trip delay, interruption, and cancellation protection.

It’s worth noting that the Citi Prestige® Card matches the Platinum Card with its earnings of 5 points/dollar on spending made directly with airlines, but the fact that it offers no travel protections at all makes it a considerably less appealing option.

Bottom Line

TAP Air Portugal is currently offering a number of excellent fates for travel to Europe from New York and Boston. The fares that I’ve seen cover travel from January onwards but you may find that different destinations are available at great prices at different times of the year.
