The majority of the the best fares are for travel during the summer months (July & August) when Business Class travel is at its slowest, but great fares are also available at the end of March/beginning of April.

From Where?

Most of the best fares are for flights that depart and arrive back to one or both of the following airports:

  • Dublin

How To Find The Fares

I found all of these fares by using the ITA Matrix Search engine.

For helpful tips and hints for how to get the most out of the ITA Matrix search take a look at these two posts:

ITA Matrix Airfare Search – The Basic Search

ITA Matrix Airfare Search – Advanced Options

The parameters I used for my search were as follows (click to enlarge):

Naturally, you should substitute in your preferred designation – in this example I’ve use San Francisco.

The key to ensuring that you find the best fares available is to make sure that you have the “Allow Airport Changes” box checked.

What To Watch Out For

The key to getting the most out of a Business Class flight is to make sure that you don’t travel on mediocre aircraft unless absolutely you have to – and it’s easy to get swept up but the great fares and to ignore the aircraft you’re being offered.

Taking the American Airlines flights to Los Angeles as an example:

For the random dates I selected for the purposes of this example the cheapest Business class fare is $1,776 (click to expand).

But, if you take a closer look at the flights, you’ll see that they route through JFK and Chicago…..

American-Airlines-Poor-Aircraft

….and anyone selecting this route would be leaving themselves with a trans-Atlantic flight in a 757 ( a truly terrible business class product) and a return trans-Atlantic flight in a 767 (not horrible, but far from the best of the products available).

So what should you do?

The trick is to be prepared to pay a little more and, in this case, to route through London on both the outbound and return journeys:

And, for an extra $44, you get to fly in the British Airways A380 Business Class cabin (reviewed here) and the American Airlines 777-300ER Business Class cabin (reviewed here):

If you’re not comfortable arriving back into a different airport from the one you departed then it will cost a further $24 more ($68 more in total) but it’s still more than worth it.

Overall

These are some of the best Business Class fares you’ll see between Europe and the US (with the exception of mistake fares – and they don’t count!).  If you’ve ever felt like finding out what it’s like to fly in the pointy end of the plane then, no matter which carrier you prefer, you should be able to find a great deal.
