For the past few weeks, IHG has been running a promotion for targeted holders of its Chase-issued credit cards in which it has been offering 20% off the cost of all awards. Sadly, the promotion is set to end tomorrow, February 8th, so there’s only a little time left to make the most of what can be an excellent deal.

Headline info

  • Save 20% on award bookings of up to 3 nights
  • This offer appears to be being targeted to select holders of the following credit cards:
  • Bookings must be made by 8 February 2022 (TOMORROW)
  • The 20% discount is valid on stays through 13 March 2022
  • Points & cash bookings are included in this promotion but only the points element will be discounted

Note: no registration is required.

Thoughts

If you’ve been targeted for this offer (and a lot of people have been), the discount will appear when you log in to your IHG account and perform an award search. This is the kind of search result you can expect to see:

Whichever way you look at it, this is great news for those of us who have been targeted. Yes, sure, the booking period is short and stays have to be made within the next 6 weeks but that shouldn’t take away from the fact that there are some fantastic deals available right now.

Thanks to this promotion and dynamic award pricing (this isn’t a busy time of year), some very popular hotels are incredibly cheap right now. Top IHG properties in places like New York, Chicago, and San Diego which can often be expensive to visit are currently bookable at rates as low as 15,200/night

…and the 20% discount has reduced the cost of an award night at a lot of desirable IHG properties to levels at which free night certificates (issued by select Chase IHG Rewards credit cards) can be used.

In further good news, it would appear that as long as you commence your 3-night stay by 13 March, you’ll get the 20% discount on the 14 and 15 March as well so you can actually get 20% off award bookings consumed by 15 March as long as the stay commences on the 13th.

I tried this with the InterContinental Park Lane (review) in London and as you’ll see if you enlarge the thumbnails below, while the cost of an award night on 13 March is discounted (51,200 points) and the cost of an award night on 14 March is not discounted (68,000 points), a booking for 13 and 14 March is discounted and costs just 52,800 per night.

What this all means is that if you’re planning a break before 13 March and you’ve been targeted for this promotion, now may be a very good time to burn some IHG Rewards points and free night certificates.

Obviously, it should go without saying that you should still check the relationship between the cash cost of the room and the cost of an award night before making a booking to make sure that you’re not getting a horrible redemption rate – a 20% discount on the cost of an award night doesn’t guarantee a great redemption rate – but based on what I’ve seen so far, there are quite a few good deals to be had.

Bottom line

This is one of the best promotions that IHG has run in quite some time – a 20% discount on award bookings can be a great deal – so if you’ve been targeted for this promotion and you haven’t checked to see if you can make the most of it, now is the time to do just that as time is running out.
