I’m always checking my American Express online account to see what offers I’ve been targeted for and things haven’t changed just because my movements are severely restricted for the time being.

Right now there’s a very nice opportunity to earn a significant number of Amex Membership Rewards points for purchases made with GoPro (or a good amount of cash back), and if you stack the offer with one of the portals the rewards can be surprisingly good.

Earn Even More Through Portals

One of the key requirements of these two offers is that purchases be made directly with the US GoPro website or through GoPro’s mobile app, but this doesn’t stop anyone from clicking through to the GoPro site via one of the many portals that are around.

If you’re looking to earn yet more Membership Rewards points on top of the 9,000 points on offer here then the 3% cash back that Rakuten is currently offering (which is equal to 3 points/dollar if you’re registered to earn MR points via Rakuten) is the way to go.

If cash back is what you’re looking for then the 5% back that TopCashback.com is offering at the moment appears to be the best offer on the market right now.

If you’re in the mood to earn some airline miles (I’m going to go ahead and guess that most people aren’t in that kind of mood right now!) you can click through one of the many airline portals to earn bonus miles/points on top of whatever you earn or get back courtesy of American Express.

The best airline portal deal will depend on which airline you fly and what value you place on each currency but I’d be most likely to click through Alaska’s portal or possibly even the AAdvantage portal on this occasion.

Thoughts

If you’re cutting back on the number of miles and points you’re looking to earn and you’re focusing more on cash back, the $90 rebate that Amex is offering is clearly the better of the two options for you…but that’s not the option I would go for.

I’m happy to continue earning Amex Membership Rewards points and as I value them at 1.5 cents each the points offer gives me a better return on my spending ($135 vs $90).

I would also choose to click through the Rakuten portal where I would earn a further 3 points/dollar (these are points on top of what I would already earn through whichever Membership Rewards credit card I used) and boost my earnings even further.

If, for example, I used my Platinum Card to spend $450 with GoPro, this is what my earnings would look like:

  • Platinum Card – 450 points (1 point/dollar)
  • Rakuten – 1,350 points (3 points/dollar)
  • Amex Offer – 9,000 points

Total: 10,800 points which I value at $162.

Nothing is stopping you from choosing to earn $90 back from Amex and using Rakuten to pick up some bonus Membership Rewards points, or choosing to earn the 9,000 bonus points and then cash back through the TopCashback portal but I’m not sure why anyone would choose to mix and match in this way – 100% cash back or 100% points would seem to make more sense.

Bottom Line

At a time when more and more people appear to be videoing themselves, their loved ones and their environment (possibly out of boredom more than anything else!) this may be a very nice way to save some cash or boost your Membership Rewards balance if you need to upgrade your equipment because your smartphone isn’t helping your aspirations of Hollywood stardom 🙂
