Double Business Extra Points On American’s New Routes From LAX

American Airlines’ Business Extra program has launched a new promotion for travelers out of LAX. Members of the program will earn double Business Extra points for flights taken on American Airlines between Los Angeles and nine destinations that the airline has recently added to its schedule…including on the Los Angeles – Auckland route.

Regular readers of the blog will know that I don’t think very much of American Airlines’ ability to communicate with its customers and I think even less of its ability to make announcements with all the information that customers need. Well, it seems that the airline can’t announce promotions correctly either.

If you received an email from American announcing this LAX Business Extra promotion you will have probably found that the link provided directed you to a completely different promotion that’s not of much use to anyone based out of LAX……

Business Extra LAXNR16 Promotion

As of 2 June 2016 American Airlines offers service on 8 new routes out LAX:

  • Seattle – 5 daily flights
  • Portland – 3 daily flights
  • Minneapolis/St Paul – 2 daily flights
  • New Orleans – 1 daily flight
  • Omaha – 1 daily flight
  • Kansas City – 1 daily flight
  • Hartford – 1 daily flight
  • Anchorage – 1 daily flight

And, as of 23 June, American Airlines is commencing 787 Dreamliner service between Los Angeles and Auckland, New Zealand.

Members of the Business Extra program will earn double points on all the new routes for travel taken between now and 31 August 2016.

A Quick Look At Business Extra

Business Extra is the loyalty program from American Airlines that’s aimed at small and medium sized businesses but, in practice, if you have a US or Canadian address anyone can join (you don’t actually have to have a business).

The terms and conditions of membership state that:

Business Extra program is available to companies (Member) (1) with two or more employee travelers, and (2) which maintain their primary physical address in [a country eligible for Business Extra]

If you have a US or Canadian address there are no minimum spend requirements – members from select other countries (list available here) must meet minimum spend criteria.

How you earn points:

Business Extra members earn the company (themselves) Business Extra points each time they:

  • Book tickets through American Airlines, British Airways or Iberia for flights on American Airlines, British Airways or Iberia.
  • Book tickets though American Airlines for flights on Finnair, JAL and Qantas.

Members with the majority of originating travel in the United States and United Kingdom earn one point for every $5 of eligible Flown Revenue during a calendar month. Members with the majority of originating travel in all other countries earn one and a half points for every $5 of eligible Flown Revenue during a calendar month.

Flown revenue is the base fare + any carrier imposed surcharges (so taxes do not count).

How you can redeem points:

Business Extra points can be redeemed for award flights, upgrades, Admirals Club memberships and more.

US Domestic Miles SAAver Awards (Plan Ahead Awards)

  • Coach – 2,000 Business Extra Points (one way)
  • Business / First Class on 2 class cabin flights – 3,200 Business Extra Points (one way)
  • First Class on 3 class cabin flights – 4,800 Business Extra Points (one way)

International Upgrades:

  • From discount economy (Fare codes B, N, O, Q, S are excluded) to Business Class – 3,100 Business Extra Points
  • From full fare economy  to Business Class – 1,200 Business Extra Points

  • The Business Extra Program costs nothing to join
  • You still earn your normal AAdvantage Miles alongside any Business Extra points for all your bookings
