I was taking a look at something in my Chase online account a little earlier today when I noticed that I’d managed to forget to register my Freedom Card for the new quarterly bonuses that it shares with the Freedom Flex Card so, just in case any other cardholders have been as forgetful as me, this is a reminder to make sure you’ve registered for the bonuses and that you’re making the most of them.

Chase Freedom/Freedom Flex 1Q 2021 Bonus Categories

The registration website for the quarterly bonus categories is live and in this quarter the Freedom Flex Card (review) and the Chase Freedom Card (no longer open to new applicants) are offering 5% cashback (or 5 points/dollar) on up to $1,500 of spending in the following categories:

  • Wholesale Clubs
  • Internet, Cable & Phone Services
  • Select Streaming Services

You’ll find a full list of valid retailers/providers here, but the more important things to know are these:

  • Wholesale clubs include Costo, BJ’s, Sam’s Club, and Texas Jasmine but gas, fuel, wholesale specialty service purchases such as travel, insurance, cell phone, and home improvement are all excluded.
  • Valid streaming services include Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, Netflix, Sling, Vudu, Fubo TV, Apple Music, SiriusXM, Pandora, Spotify, and YouTube TV. Purchases other than subscription services, e.g., music or video downloads, equipment, gift cards, etc… are all excluded.

Don’t forget that these quarterly bonus categories are in addition to the permanent bonus categories that the Freedom Flex credit card offers – Travel (booked through Chase), Drugstores & Dining) – so make sure you’re making the most of those too.

Quick Thoughts

I’m reasonably happy with these categories. Maxing out the $1,500 spending limit across a 3 month period when Costco and Sam’s Club are valid retailers shouldn’t be too much of an issue at all (some wholesale clubs have been selling discounted gift cards for Alaska Airlines and Delta recently so it will be interesting to see if they trigger the bonus or if they’re excluded).

If you’re interested solely in pure cash back, the Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card (review) is still the best option for anyone looking to save on their streaming subscriptions (it offers 6% cash back).

If, however, you’re trying to get the best rebate possible and you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, a Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, or the excellent Chase Ink Preferred Card, you can convert the Freedom Flex Card’s cash back that you earn from the streaming service payments into Ultimate Rewards Points which are considerably more valuable than the cash back. 5% cash back will get you 5 Ultimate Points per dollar and based on my valuation of UR Points (1.5 cents each), they will effectively give you a 7.5% rebate.

Several other credit cards already offer good bonuses for spending on internet, cable, and wireless services (e.g. Chase Ink Preferred Card) so if you already have one of those it may not be worth you moving your payments to the Freedom Flex Card. However, it’s worth remembering that the Freedom Flex Card (review) offers cell phone protection of up to $800 per claim and $1,000 per year (max 2 claims per year) so if the card that you’re using to pay your cell phone bill doesn’t offer that, it may be worth taking the time to pay this quarter’s bills with your Freedom Flex Card to give yourself at least a few months of protection.

Bottom Line

The Chase Freedom Flex quarterly bonuses are now live and cardholders can enjoy 5% cash back (or 5 UR Points per dollar) on up to $1,500 of spending with wholesale clubs, internet, cable and wireless service providers, and with select streaming services. make sure you register your card and make the most of these bonuses while you can.
