It looks like the battle for Los Angeles is hotting up. American Airlines has recently been making a big push for the Los Angeles market with high-profile sponsorships (Hollywood Reporter, Hollywood Bowl etc…), numerous new domestic routes out of LA as well as some high-profile international routes (Sydney & Auckland). On top of that they also have one of the best (possibly the best) premium cabin products on the Los Angeles to New York route. But it doesn’t look like Delta is going to take this lying down.

Delta Extends Airbus A330-300 Service From Los Angeles

Earlier this month Delta began adding Airbus A330-300 aircraft to the Los Angeles – New York (JFK) route as a red-eye service on a few days per week:

Now it seems the airline is extending A330 Los Angeles service into the summer season….and they’re not going to be serving the red-eye flights any more.

From 10 April 2016 Delta will be flying the Airbus A330-300 6x/week and the aircraft will operate the 8:45am flight out of Los Angeles:

The aircraft’s full schedule (as of 10 April) is as follows:

DL040 LAX 08:45 – 17:15 JFK (No Saturday A330 Service)
DL419 JFK 15:30 – 19:05 LAX (No Saturday A330 Service)

The flight numbers may changes as we head into May and, at some point in the summer, the departure times changes by a few minutes but the A330-300 is currently scheduled to operate this service until 2 September 2016.

Delta A330-300

Delta’s A330-300 aircraft comes fitted with 34 Delta One seats (Premium Cabin), 40 Delta Comfort seats (extra leg room seats) and 219 Economy Class seats.

Per the Delta website the A330-300 is equipped with the latest lie-flat Delta One seats…which I can’t publish due to copyright laws but that you can see on Delta’s media page here.

I addition, it’s worth noting that the dimensions for the Delta Comfort seats and the regular Economy Class seats aren’t too bad:

  • Delta Comfort: 35″ Seat Pitch / 18″ Seat Width
  • Main Cabin: 31″ Seat Pitch / 18″ Seat Width

Yes, 31″ of leg room isn’t great but 18″ of seat width is better than you get on a lot of long-haul flights nowadays.

All seats on Delta’s A330-300 come with personal entertainment screens and there’s onboard wi-fi (supplied by GoGo so don’t expect great speeds!).

Delta Adds Flights To Aspen From Los Angeles

This is an early announcement of a route not due to start until the 2016/17 Winter Season.

From 17 December 2016 Delta will operate a daily service between Los Angles and Aspen on the following schedule:

DL4815 LAX 10:30 – 13:30 ASE
DL4815 ASE 14:15 – 15:25 LAX

The route will be operated by Skywest Airlines using CRJ700 Aircraft.

Delta To Add New Business Class Menus

Delta has announced that it is to partner with Union Square Cafe (of New York) to offer international Delta One customers a new set of menus.

From 1 March 2016 “select trans-Atlantic routes” will feature the new Union Cafe-inspired menus which “feature Italian-influenced fare created under the culinary direction of Union Square Cafe Executive Chef and Partner Carmen Quagliata and brings the restaurant’s award-winning, locally-focused philosophy to international skies.

There are no details, as yet, as to which specific trans-Atlantic routes will be getting these new menus but, presumably, the more premium routes will see this change first.
