At the beginning of April, Delta was the first of the major US carriers to announce status extensions and, among other things, extensions to select benefits offered by the Delta SkyMiles credit cards issued by American Express. Now, with the travel crisis not looking like it’s going to get better any time soon, Delta has announced a second round of extensions to select benefits that accompany its co-branded credit cards.

Delta Sky Club Membership Extensions

When Delta first extended Sky Club memberships back in April the extensions applied to memberships with an expiration date of 1 March 2020 and the extensions were for a period of 6 months.

Now Delta has said that individual and Executive Sky Club memberships that were active as of 1 March 2020 will have their expiration dates extended through 30 June 2021. Memberships with an expiration date past 30 June 2021 will keep their current expiration dates.

Delta SkyMiles Benefits Extended

Back in April, SkyMiles Select Members received a six-month extension to the Priority Boarding benefit and any unused drink vouchers. As of yesterday, those benefits were extended by a further 6 months.

SkyMiles members with Upgrade Certificates or $200 Travel Vouchers had the extension dates of those certificates/vouchers extended by 6 months back in April and, so far, Delta has not indicated that any further extensions will be forthcoming.

Delta SkyMiles Credit Card Benefit Extensions

Delta SkyMiles Gold Card

Card holders who had a $100 Delta Flight Credit that expired on or after 1 March 2020 had that expiration date extended by 6 months back in April. Delta has now confirmed that Gold card holders who earned (or who will earn) a $100 Delta Flight Credit between 1 January and 30 November 2020 will have the expiration date of that credit extended to 31 December 2021.

Delta SkyMiles Platinum Card

Back in April, Platinum card holders with Companion Certificates with an original expiration date between 1 March and 30 June 2020 were given extensions though the end of 2020, and card holders with Companion Certificates with an expiration date between 1 July 2020 and 1 April 2021 were all given 6 moth extensions.

As of yesterday, Platinum card holders with unused Companion Certificates as of 1 September 2020 or who earn Companion Certificates between 1 September and 30 November 2020, will see the expiration date of those certificates extended to 31 December 2021.

Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card

Back in April, Reserve card holders with Companion Certificates with an original expiration date between 1 March and 30 June 2020 were given extensions though the end of 2020 and card holders with Companion Certificates with an expiration date between 1 July 2020 and 1 April 2021 were all given 6 moth extensions.

As of yesterday, Reserve card holders with unused Companion Certificates as of 1 September 2020 or who earn Companion Certificates between 1 September and 30 November 2020, will see the expiration date of those certificates extended to 31 December 2021.

Card holders with Delta Sky Club One-Time Guest Passes issued between 1 January and 30 November 2020 will have the expiration dates of those passes extended to 31 December 2021 (back in April, all guest pass expiration dates were extended by 6 months).

Bottom Line

Delta was the first of the major US carriers to extend elite statuses and to extend various benefits offered by its loyalty program and its co-branded credit cards. Now the airline is the first to revisit those extensions and in the light of the ongoing crisis, to introduce further extensions to ensure that its flyers get a chance to use the benefits they earned.
