Amazon and Citi are running a targeted promotion in which shoppers can use a single ThankYou point (earned through a Citi ThankYou credit card) to get a 20% discount on their purchases. The maximum discount available is $30 but as it can be earned on a wide variety of third party gift cards as well as on all the goods that Amazon sells, this is an offer not to be missed.
How This Works
- Shoppers must have their Citi ThankYou card account linked to their Amazon account to take part in this promotion (click here to link).
- If you haven’t already linked your accounts, you will have to wait for 24 – 36 hours before you can check if you have been targeted for this promotion.
- The promotion requires activation via this page and if you have been targeted for this offer you’ll see a page that looks like this:
- Click to activate and you’re all set!
What You Need To Know
The full terms and conditions have been reproduced at the end of this post but here are a few key snippets:
- Get a 20% bonus up to a maximum of $30 when using at least 1 ThankYou point at checkout.
- The promotion will end 11:59PM PST on 09/30/2020, or when the cumulative value of redeemed promotion codes reaches $250,000, whichever is earlier. The promotional code will expire concurrently.
- The terms and conditions say that the promotion is only valid on eligible products sold by Amazon but, as I’ll show in the next section, this doesn’t seem to prevent shoppers from buying 3rd party gift cards.
Getting The Discount
Just about any non-digital product that is advertised as being sold by Amazon will trigger this discount (assuming you have been targeted for the offer). To demonstrate how this works, here’s a transaction I processed for $300 (note: you’ll only get 20% off on purchases of up to $150 – I happened to need more gift cards):
At the checkout page, it’s important that you pay attention to the method of payment and that you make sure that you’re only using 1 Citi ThankYou point for your purchase (redeeming ThankYou points at Amazon is usually a poor way to your points):
Assuming all has gone according to plan, the payment summary will show the discount you’re getting courtesy of Citi and a penny will be deducted from your total to account for the single ThankYou point that’s being used in this transaction.
That’s it. It’s as simple as that.
Bottom Line
Getting up to $30 back on an Amazon purchase is the best value redemption you’ll find for a single ThankYou point so it’s an offer worth grasping with both hands if you have been targeted. if you haven’t been targeted this time around don’t worry, this offer comes around reasonably frequently.
so why would you not cap your purchase at $150 in order to get the maximum ($30) discount?
You should. I purchased $300 because I needed that amount of gift cards anyway. I’ve clarified this in the post as it was far from obvious.
