American Express is currently running a number of offers for stays at IHG properties in the United States (I wrote about the latest offer earlier today) and now it looks as if Chase has joined in too. I’m currently seeing two different offers on two different Chase-issued credit cards but there may be other versions of these offers out there.

My Two IHG Offers From Chase

The IHG first offer I noticed was on my IHG Rewards Club credit card (the one that’s no longer open to new applicants) and this offer is for a 5% rebate on stays at IHG properties worldwide.a close-up of a sign

I had assumed that the best IHG offer would be targeted to my IHG co-branded Chase credit card so I was surprised to see that I have been targeted for a better offer on my Chase Sapphire Reserve Card.

a close-up of a sign Both offers require a minimum spend of $100 before the rebate will be triggered and the rebates are capped at $19 and $40 respectively. Essentially, if you’re using the 5% offer you’ll need to spend $380 to max-out the offer while the offer for a 10% rebate will require $400 of spending if you’re not to leave cash on the table.

Both offers expire on 12 January 2021.

Thoughts

On the face of things, the Amex offer I wrote about earlier is probably a better deal than the 5% or the 10% Chase rebates if you’re planning a stay at a Crowne Plaza in the United States but because the Amex offer doesn’t run out until the end of February, there’s an opportunity for someone targeted for both a Chase and Amex offer to use them both on different stays (or on the same stay if you can persuade the hotel to let you split your bill between two cards).

As far as flexibility goes, the rebates offer from Chase are the clear winners. Unlike the Amex offer, the Chase rebates aren’t restricted to Crowne Plaza properties (all IHG brands appear to be included) and unlike the Amex offers, neither of the Chase offers appears to restrict the offer to properties in the United States so the rebate can be earned at properties around the world.

If you’ve been targeted for one of the Chase offers on your IHG Rewards Club Premier credit card (review), you’ll be able to earn 25 points/dollar on your IHG spending* (which I equate to a 10% rebate) as well as earning a rebate of either 5% or 10% from Chase. That means that the total rebate on offer is between 15% and 20% (on up to $400 of spending).

If you don’t happen to have an IHG co-branded credit card but have had one of these offers targeted to your Chase Sapphire Reserve Card (as I have been), you’ll earn 3 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points for every dollar you spend with IHG (which I equate to a 4.5% rebate), 10 IHG points/dollar for being an IHG Rewards Club member (which I equate with a 4% rebate) as well as the 5% or 10% rebate that Chase has added to your card. Assuming you don’t have IHG Rewards Club status that means that the total rebate on offer is between 13.5% and 18.5% (on up to $400 of spending).

Interestingly, if you happen to have IHG Rewards Club Platinum or Spire Elite status and have been targeted for one of the Chase offers on your Sapphire Reserve Card, my valuations dictate that that’s the better card to use for the 5% offer and the 10% offer.

Here’s what an IHG Platinum Elite (like me) would earn if he/she used their Chase Sapphire Reserve Card with either the 5% rebate or the 10% rebate:

Note: Spire Elites would end up with total rebates of 17.5% or 22.5%

Clearly, if you have the 10% offer targeted to your IHG Rewards Club Premier credit card and only a 5% offer targeted to your Reserve card, the IHG co-branded card is the one to use but, in all other scenarios, the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card offers the better total rebate if you have Platinum Status or higher with IHG.

Bottom Line

Chase is targeting cardholders for savings of between 5% and 10% for up to $400 of spending at IHG properties by 12 January 2021. If you have these offers targeted to more than one Chase card your instinct may tell you that the best card to use is your IHG co-branded credit card but that may not necessarily be the case – make sure you work out the math before you choose which card to pay with.

  1. Yeah, but how many people will be traveling by January 11? So it isn’t really that generous of an offer. I don’t know about your state, but my state, MA, which had been doing great, is doing pretty badly now. Not as bad as many other states, but bad enough I wouldn’t want to go stay at a hotel somewhere. And if I go out of state, a 14 day quarantine. So not that big a deal, IHMO.

    • Oh my state (CA) is doing terribly right now so I can see where you’re coming from. But while I agree that this isn’t, by any means, an amazing deal, there are still a lot of people who may be able to turn this in to a nice saving.

  2. This is an awful card. I cancelled my IHG earlier this year since it was so frustrating and almost impossible yo reddem your points for airline tickets and even a decent hotel room! I ended up just getting gift cards for my points. The gift cards came one at a time adter 3 months! DO NOT GET IHG CREDIT CARDS!

    • Firstly, why would you get a hotel credit card with a view the redeeming the hotel points for airline tickets?

Secondly, there’s a lot wrong with IHG Rewards but the ease with which its points can be redeemed isn’t generally an issue for most people. I’d be interested to know how many points you were trying to redeem and at which properties?

  3. We have 2 chase ihg credit cards! We are still waiting to hear if they will extend our free anniversary nights that we couldn’t use because of the Covid, will expire in 2 weeks! Just getting the run around! Has anyone heard anything?
