With just two weeks left in the first quarter of 2021, Chase has now revealed the 2Q 2021 category spending bonuses for the Chase Freedom Flex credit card (review) and the legacy Chase Freedom credit card (no longer open to new applicants) and registration for the new bonus categories is now open.

Chase Freedom/Freedom Flex 2Q 2021 Bonus Categories

The registration website for the quarterly bonus categories has now been updated and in the second quarter of 2021 the Chase Freedom Flex credit card (review) and the legacy Chase Freedom credit card will offer 5% cashback (or 5 points/dollar) on up to $1,500 of spending in the following categories:

  • Gas Stations
  • Home Improvement Stores

These two bonus categories are in addition to the permanent bonus categories that the Freedom Flex credit card offers – Travel booked through Chase (5x/dollar) and Drugstores & Dining (3x/dollar).

While it won’t be very difficult to max out the 2Q bonuses on offer, it’s hard to get excited about these new categories.

If you have work to do to your home, the 5x/dollar at Home Improvement stores will be useful, and with gas stations usually selling a lot more than just gas I’m sure that people will find creative ways to bring forward spending to make sure that they earn every bit of bonus cash back going. But did Chase really have to limit the bonus categories to just two? Why not throw in a 3rd category like grocery stores or gym memberships (both of which were bonus categories in 2Q 2020)? Limiting cardholders to just 2 bonus categories for 2Q 2021 seems a little mean-spirited.

Still, as I said, the full $75 cash back or 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points on offer in 2Q shouldn’t be too difficult for most of us to earn, and if you’re wondering what Chase will recognize as a gas station or a home improvement store you can check this webpage where you should find all the information you need.

If you’re wondering if gas purchased at stores like BJ’s, Costco, and Sams Club will trigger the bonus I have good news for you – it will.

Bottom Line

Chase has confirmed that the 2Q 2021 bonus categories for the Chase Freedom Flex credit card (review) and the legacy Chase Freedom credit card will be home improvement stores and gas stations. Registration will remain open through 14 June (here) and bonus points will be earned for spending in these categories between 1 April and 30 June 2021.
