It’s April 2nd and that means that we’ve moved into the second quarter of the year. A new quarter means the new Chase Freedom Flex® credit card bonuses are live so assuming that you’re a cardholder (and why wouldn’t you be?), it’s time to make sure that you’ve registered your card and that you know what new bonuses your card is offering.
Chase Freedom Flex® 2Q 2021 Bonus Categories
The registration website is where you’ll find full details of the latest quarterly bonuses that the Chase Freedom Flex® credit card (review) and the legacy Chase Freedom credit card are offering. This quarter, cardholders are being given 5% cashback (or 5 points/dollar) on up to $1,500 of spending in the following categories:
- Gas Stations
- Home Improvement Stores
These two bonus categories are in addition to the permanent bonus categories that the Chase Freedom Flex® credit card offers – Travel booked through Chase (5x/dollar) and Drugstores & Dining (3x/dollar).
While it won’t be very difficult to max out the 2Q bonuses on offer, I’m not going to pretend that the categories are particularly exciting – they’re not – but 5% cash back or, if you have a premium Chase credit card, 5 points/dollar is something that’s always worth having.
If you have work to do to your home, the 5x/dollar at Home Improvement stores will be useful, and with gas stations usually selling a lot more than just gas I’m sure that people will find creative ways to bring forward spending to make sure that they earn every bit of bonus cash back going.
It’s a little disappointing that Chase has limited the bonus categories to just two – why not throw in a 3rd category like grocery stores or gym memberships as we saw in 2Q 2020? – but this is what we have to deal with so there’s no point in dwelling on what may have been.
As I said, the full $75 cash back or 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points on offer in 2Q shouldn’t be too difficult for most of us to earn, and if you’re wondering what Chase will recognize as a gas station or a home improvement store you can check this webpage where you should find all the information you need.
For readers who like to purchase their gas at stores like BJ’s, Costco, and Sams Club and who are now wondering if gas purchases at those stores will trigger the bonus, I have good news for you – they will.
Bottom Line
Chase’s new 2Q 2021 bonus categories for the Chase Freedom Flex® credit card (review) and the legacy Chase Freedom credit card are now live so purchases made at home improvement stores and gas stations will now earn 5% cash back or 5 points/dollar. Registration will remain open through 14 June (here) and bonus points will be earned for spending in these categories between 1 April and 30 June 2021 on up to $1,500 of spending.
