It was back in February that we found out that 'The Club' lounge at Phoenix Sky Harbor Terminal 4 was set to close and that it would be replaced by two new lounges - an American Express Centurion Lounge and an Escape Lounge.Up until now we haven't really had much idea of what to expect from the two lounges but, as of today, American Express has shared 7 images showing what is planned.
American Express Centurion lounges were a breath of fresh air when they first appeared on the scene earlier this decade but their lustre has dulled over the past few years as airline lounges have improved and overcrowding at Centurion Lounges has become a serious problem. Over the past few years Amex has been forced to address the overcrowding in its popular Centurion Lounges as some lounges (like the one in Miami) were turning into a bit of a joke - I couldn't find a seat in the Miami lounge on 3 of my last 4 visits so have been avoiding it for the past year.
American Express has announced that its next international Centurion Lounge will open at London Heathrow's Terminal 3 in 2019. This will be Amex's first Centurion Lounge in Europe and the first international lounge to be opened since the Hong Kong Centurion Lounge opened in October 2017.
American Express has announced that it plans to open a new Centurion Lounge at New York JFK's Terminal 4 in "early 2019". According to Amex the lounge will have "spectacular airfield views and exceptional amenities" and will be the largest Centurion Lounge in the network.
The American Express Centurion lounge portfolio continues to grow and now not just in the US. The new Centurion lounge in Hong Kong opened its doors today making it the first Centurion lounge outside of North America.
Back in June I reviewed the Amex Centurion Lounge in Dallas and described the Centurion Lounge network as “an oasis in an otherwise pretty drab lounge landscape in the US” but now I’m beginning to rethink my opinion. I recently visited the Miami Centurion lounge while on my way to Aruba (review here) and it was anything but an oasis.
The Amex Centurion lounge in Miami opened in June of this year and was a welcome addition to an airport where the lounges are really not up to much. The lounge is situated in concourse D of Miami Airport, near gate D12, which this makes it very convenient for American Airlines travelers whose gates surround the area the lounge sits in.
