Update 21 September: It looks like Hilton extended this promotion at the last minute. The 100% bonus is now available through 25 September.

Hilton has been running its current points sale since the end of July but there are just days left to make the most of the deal on offer. Hilton Honors members are being given a 100% bonus on all purchases of 10,000 points or more which, as usual, values Hilton’s currency at 0.5 cents/point. With most of Hilton’s best properties around the world operating with super-low occupancy rates, award availability and pricing is excellent which means that this sale can be used to book some amazing stays.

The Math

The math for this promotion couldn’t be more straightforward – as long as you buy at least 10,000 Hilton Honors points you’ll get a 100% bonus and pay just 0.005 cents each for them.

One of the major bonuses of Hilton’s points sales is that Honors members aren’t forced into buying more points than they need just to get the best cost/point.

At 0.5 cents/point, there’s definitely value to be had by everyone participating in this sale but Hilton Honors elite members have the best chance of scoring a great deal.

General Bookings

As with all miles and points sales, my golden rule applies and no one should be buying points without a plan and everyone should be doing some simple maths to work out if this sale is for them. It doesn’t take an advanced degree to check a property’s cash rates and to compare them to the cost of buying points and using those points to book the same stay …so that’s what everyone should be doing.

There’s nothing complicated here – if buying miles in this sale and using them to book a stay works out to be significantly cheaper than paying in cash, taking full advantage of this sale is probably a good idea. If it’s not significantly cheaper, it’s probably a sign you should stay away.

Elite Bookings

One key way in which Hilton Honors elites (of all levels from Silver through Diamond) have an advantage over non-elites is that elite status opens up the ability for guests to book 5-night award stays for the cost of a 4-night stay (if you’re US-based and don’t have elite status you should consider getting the Hilton Honors Surpass credit card (review) which bestows Gold elite status on all its cardholders and costs just $95/year).

Standard rooms at all of Hilton’s top properties worldwide cost no more than 95,000 points per night, so a 5-night stay at one of these properties would set an Honors member back a total of 380,000 points (4 x 95,000). The keen-eyed among you will notice that you can’t buy 380,000 points in this sale (the promotion caps at 320,000 points) but that won’t matter to people who already have at least 60,000 points in their accounts or to people who are happy to pool points from multiple accounts.

380,000 points purchased in this sale at 0.5 cents each would cost a total of $1,900, while 5-night stays at Hilton’s top properties can easily top $3,500. Here’s a 5-night stay at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills where rooms can be booked for 95,000 or $758 + taxes per night:

And here’s the Conrad Maldives charging 95,000 or $826 + taxes and fees per night:

Yes, before anyone gets overly excited and emails me with a complaint, I’m happy to admit that the deals aren’t always going to be as good as the ones I’ve just highlighted (some deals will be terrible…that’s why you have to do the math), and I’m happy to admit that you still have to account for the costs of getting to these great properties as well as the cost of food and drinks at any of the properties that are isolated, but these things don’t mean that you can’t book amazing trips and get amazing deals with miles purchased in this sale.

If you weren’t planning on visiting the Maldives and are not particularly flush with cash right now, it almost certainly doesn’t make economical sense to plan a trip to the Maldives on the back of this points sale alone…but if you’ve been considering booking such a trip this points sale may be a huge money saver.

Bottom Line

Just because a lot of us are still confined to our own parts of the world right now doesn’t mean that we can’t plan and book for happier times ahead, so this is definitely a sale worth considering…but you have just days left to take part. Right now, there are a lot of big-name properties showing better-than-usual award night availability deep into 2021, so it’s worth checking to see if any of the properties you’d love to visit can be booked cheaply with points bought in this sale. This is especially true if you have elite status and can make the most of the 5 nights for the cost of 4 benefit.

    • Perhaps I should have used the phrase “the overwhelming majority of standard rooms at Hilton’s top properties worldwide cost no more than 95,000 points”. But, even so, my overall point is still valid.
