Deal: Alaska Airlines points on sale with a mystery bonus [Targeted]

Alaska Airlines is back with a new mileage sale in which it’s offering select Atmos Rewards members a mystery maximum bonus which varies from account to account.

If all you see is a 90% bonus (as I do), it may be worth waiting to see if the next sale offers you anything better, but if you’ve been targeted for a 100% bonus, this sale could be useful.

The 100% bonus sale

• Buy 1,000 – 4,000 Alaska Atmos Rewards points and get no bonus
• Buy 5,000 – 14,000 Alaska Atmos Rewards points and get a 80% bonus
• Buy 15,000 – 29,000 Alaska Atmos Rewards points and get a 90% bonus
• Buy 30,000 – 100,000 Alaska Atmos Rewards points and get a 100% bonus

This is often what the Alaska Airlines 100% bonus sale looks like, so it may seem familiar, but there are different version of this sale as well.

Key terms

The numbers

Because Alaska Airlines doesn’t vary the cost/mile within each of its pricing bands, Atmos Rewards members will be paying the lowest cost per mile available in this sale whether they buy 30,000 or 100,000 points in a single transaction.

Here, for example, is what a purchase of 100,000 points looks like:

Buying 200,000 points at a cost of $3,762.50 means that you’re buying points at ~1.88 cents each.

Don’t forget that Alaska Airlines only adds on the taxes at the final stage of the purchase process, so don’t make the mistake of calculating you cost/mile too early as you may end up thinking that you’re getting a better deal than you are.

To buy or not to buy?

Before we go any further, here’s the usual disclaimer:

If you have no immediate use for Alaska Atmos points, you shouldn’t be taking part in this sale. It’s never a good idea to stockpile miles and there’s nothing here that changes that so our fundamental rule applies.

Now that that’s out of the way…

One of the biggest positive aspects of the Alaska Atmos Rewards program is that it doesn’t impose a limit on how many points you can purchase in a single promotion or in a calendar year if you hold elite status. Technically, elite status holders can keep buying points until they run out of money.

If you don’t have Alaska Atmos Rewards status, you’ll have to make do with buying a maximum of 150,000 points pre-bonus (300,000 points post bonus).

The first thing that need to be pointed out is that Alaska Airlines has made wholesale changes to its award charts in recent years so the sweet spots that were around a couple of years ago are mostly not there any more.

That being said, some new sweet spots have appeared, so there are still some very good uses for Alaska Airlines Atmos points.

To show you what I mean, here are a few examples together with the cost these awards based on a cost of 1.88 cents/mile.

Economy Class awards (one-way)

If flying Alaska/Hawaiian within the Americas:

Flights under 700 miles: from 4,500 points ($85)
Flights between 701 and 1,400 miles: from 7,500 points ($141)
Flights between 1,401 and 2,100 miles: from 10,000 points ($188)

If flying partner airlines (e.g. American Airlines) within the Americas

Flights under 700 miles: from 4,500 points ($85)
Flights between 701 and 1,400 miles: from 7,500 points ($141)

If flying partner airlines from the US to/from Europe the Middle East and Africa or flying within Europe the Middle East and Africa:

Flights under 1,500 miles: from 7,500 points ($141)
Flights between 1,501 and 3,500 miles: from 22,500 points ($423)*

If flying partner airlines from the United States to/from Asia Pacific, between Asia Pacific and Europe the Middle East and Africa, or within Asia Pacific

Flights under 1,500 miles: from 7,500 points ($141)

*This is really only a sweet spot on select longer flights.

Premium cabin awards

If flying Alaska/Hawaiian within the Americas:

Flights between 1,401 and 2,100 miles: First Class from 25,000 points ($470)

If flying partner airlines within the Americas:

Flights between 1,501 and 3,500 miles: Business Class from 45,000 points ($846)

If flying partner airlines from the United States to/from Asia Pacific, between Asia Pacific and Europe the Middle East and Africa, or within Asia Pacific

Flights under 1,500 miles: Business Class from 15,000 points ($282)
Flights between 7,001 and 10,000 miles: Business Class from 85,000 points ($1,598)

Key things to keep in mind:

• The mileage requirements shown above all have “from” before them as the figures shown are for saver awards. Costs for these routes can be higher.
• Alaska Airlines charges a $20 booking fee for partner awards (waived if you hold the Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® card).
• Bookings on select partners (e.g. British Airways) will incur surcharges and these should be taken into account when calculating the value of an award booked with purchased points.
• Historically Alaska Airlines seems to block close-in bookings of partner awards (within 72 hours), so keep this in mind if you need to make a last minute booking.
• Of late American Airlines appears to be making it harder to book its flights with partner miles/points in the 7 days leading up to departure, so this needs to be kept in mind if you need to make a close-in booking.

Use the right credit card

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan mileage sales are processed by Points.com and that eliminates the scope to earn a travel/flight/airline bonus by using a credit card that offers bonus points for shopping in one of those categories.

With that option closed off, this makes this sale a good opportunity to use a credit card on which you’re working towards a strong welcome bonus or, if you’re not working towards a card’s welcome bonus, the Citi Double Cash® card which offers 2% cash back on all purchases would be one of the better options to use.

Bottom line

The key to doing well out of this sale is this: Do your research, find awards that work for you, and only then buy the points you need – it’s hard to get burned when you buy points and use them within days of the purchase.

Short-haul awards (often within the Americas) consistently offer easy ways to get great value out of purchased Atmos points, but there can be some great value to be had out of some of the mid- and long-haul awards.
