Following on from Tuesday’s news that British Airways will be moving, in part, to a revenue based loyalty program, the airline has now also announced that it is again extending its offer of double tier points on bookings made through its British Airways Holidays subsidiary.

How to earn double Tier Points

The most recent offer of double tier points that we saw from British Airways was for travel by 31 December 2023, but that end date has just been extended to 31 December 2024.

To qualify, customers will need to either:

  • Book a holiday (flights + hotel or flights + car) of at least five nights for travel before 31 December 2024, or
  • Have a holiday booking (flights + hotel or flights + car) for at least five nights already in place.

A hotel or car must form part of your booking for the whole trip if you are to earn double Tier Points but bookings don’t have to be made through British Airways holidays – a standard flight + car booking will trigger the bonus Tier Points.

Full terms and conditions can be found on the promotion page.

Quick thoughts

Hidden away in the details of Tuesday’s British Airways Executive Club devaluation was the news that Avios earned from flights booked as part of a British Airways holiday package will continue to be awarded based on the distance flown and not on the price of the booking.

For bookings made after 18 October (when the new Avios earning system comes into play), that news was already a good incentive to make a British Airways Holidays booking if it is economically sensible to do so (i.e. it’s not cheaper to book flights and hotel/car separately) and if you don’t mind missing out on hotel elite benefits and credits that you may otherwise get had you booked with the hotel/hotel chain directly.

Now that we know that British Airways Holidays bookings will continue to earn double tier points through the end of 2024, such bookings are looking more attractive than ever.

As far as earning Tier Points goes, the sweet spot here will probably be Executive Club Silver Status (oneworld Sapphire status) which comes with a number of useful benefits (like lounge access and free seat selection at the time of booking), and which requires a traveler to earn 600 Tier Points and to fly on four segments booked through British Airways.

That’s a Tier Point and segment total that could now easily be achieved quite easily with trips that include a hotel or car booking.

Bottom line

British Airways is now offering double tier points on select holiday and flight + car bookings that cover the period through 31 December 2024.

That’s not going to make up for the significant cut in Avios earnings that a lot of people are facing for bookings made from 18 October, but for anyone who needs more Executive Club tier points and who would like to continue earning Avios based on the distance flown (and not based on the cost of the booking), this will be a little welcome news.
