Amex has published a new offer for flights with Air France/KLM in which targeted cardholders can earn 20,000 Membership Rewards points. Ordinarily, I’d call this a truly fantastic offer but it loses a bit of its sheen when you realize that cardholders have just one month in which to trigger the bonus.

Headline Details:

Get 20,000 additional Membership Rewards points one-time by using your enrolled Card to spend a minimum of $1,000 in one or more eligible transactions direct with Air France or KLM by 10/31/2021. Flights must originate in US and be charged in USD to qualify.

Key Terms:

  • Enrollment limited.
  • Must first add offer to Card and then use same Card to redeem.
  • Limit 1 enrolled Card per Card Member across all American Express offer channels.
  • Your enrollment of an eligible American Express Card for this offer extends only to that Card. Your enrollment does not extend to any other Cards that may be linked to the same Membership Rewards program account (such as Additional Cards).
  • Offer valid only on flights booked through US websites www.klm.us and www.airfrance.us and via merchant US mobile app only.
  • Flight must originate in US and be charged in USD to qualify. Not valid for purchase made through partner sites, agents, affiliates and third parties.
  • Excludes KLM Package Deals, City Pass Amsterdam, hotel bookings, car rentals, ground transportation, tours, airport transfers, equipment services, [email protected], purchases of miles, and lounge access fees.
  • Excludes Air France Music, Air France Saphir, Air France Shopping, convention/conference/seminar services, baggage drop off, group reservations, La Boutique Air France, parking, Stress Free Flying workshop, flight crew training, Flying Blue Store, KLM Jet Center, KLM Wanna Gives.
  • Excludes bookings made via a travel agent.
  • In most cases, you may not receive the additional Membership Rewards points if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it.
  • Limit of 20,000 additional Membership Rewards points per Card Member.
  • The enrolled Card account must be active, not be past due, canceled or have a returned payment outstanding to receive the additional Membership Rewards points.
  • Any additional points you receive through this offer are in addition to the points you would normally receive for purchases charged to your Card, but the number of additional points you receive will be based on the purchase price after any credit or other discount is applied.
  • Additional points will be credited to your Membership Rewards program account within 90 days after 10/31/2021, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase.

Full terms and conditions can be found on the AMEX offer page (assuming you’ve been targeted for this offer).

Quick Thoughts

It’s a shame that this offer is only available for a single month – the last time this offer was published (in 2019) cardholders had well over two months to trigger the bonus – and it’s a shame that the offer is limited to departures from the US, but those two things aside, this is still a pretty good offer to be targeted for if you’re in the market for an AF/KLM booking.

$1,000 isn’t all that much to spend on air travel (if you’re a family or booking a premium cabin) so this shouldn’t be a difficult offer for most people to use.

Note: I’m seeing this offer targeted to all of my Amex Membership Rewards cards but not to any of my other Amex cards so it looks like there isn’t a parallel offer where the bonus on offer is a cash rebate.

I value Membership Rewards points at 1.5 cents each (that’s based on the value that I know I can get out of them with ease) so the 20,000 points on offer here represent an effective rebate of $300. If you can arrange to spend not much more than the $1,000 required to trigger the points bonus you’ll be getting almost 30% off your booking. That’s pretty good going!

Also, as I can see this offer targeted to the Platinum Card® from American Express (review) that’s sitting in my wallet, a lot of people should have an opportunity to earn 5 points/dollar (terms apply) on their Air France/KLM spending in addition to the 20,000 bonus points on offer here. Using my earlier valuation of 1.5 cents/point, that’s an additional effective rebate of 7.5% and that just makes this offer even more attractive.

Bottom Line

American Express is now targeting select cardholders for 20,000 bonus points on bookings of $1,000 or more made with Air France and KLM USA. Make sure you read the terms and conditions of the offer carefully before you book (not all spending with the airlines will qualify to trigger the credit) and make sure you book using the US versions of the Air France/KLM website. Most importantly, make sure you check the entry requirements for whatever destination you’d like to visit before making any bookings to make sure that you won’t be required to self-isolate upon arrival – it would be a shame to have to spend half of your vacation confined to your hotel room.
