For the past couple of weeks, IHG Rewards has been running an excellent award sale in which it has been offering targeted members and holders of its co-branded credit cards a 20% discount on select award stays. This offer ends tomorrow so if you’ve been targeted but have not made your bookings yet, you’re running out of time to make the most of this deal.

Headline info

  • Save 20% on award bookings of up to 3 nights
  • Currently, this offer is open to targeted members of IHG Rewards and holders of the following credit cards:
  • Bookings must be made by 5 April 2022 (TOMORROW)
  • The 20% discount is valid on stays through 25 May 2022
  • Points & cash bookings are included in this promotion but only the points element will be discounted
  • This deal cannot be combined with the 4th-night free benefit that comes with the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card.

Note: no registration is required.

Recognizing the deal

There’s no landing page for this deal and there’s no page (that I can find) that explains what the deal is all about but if the deal is open to you, the search results that you see when you look for an eligible award night will automatically show the discount.

The IHG website shows the original cost and discounted cost

If you’re searching on the IHG app things aren’t quite so clear. On the app, the search results don’t display the original cost and the discounted cost but if you see results where the cost isn’t a very round number, you can be sure that this promotion’s discount is being applied to your searches.

Thoughts

I love this sale. Not only does it make some expensive properties a little bit more affordable…

…but it also makes some existing great deals even better…

…as well as bringing a considerable number of desirable properties into range of the free night certificates (worth up to 40,000 points) that come with the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card (review) and the legacy IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card (no longer open to new applicants):

Importantly, it looks as if these discounts are genuine and that we’re not simply looking at inflated prices being discounted to give the appearance of a good deal. To check this, I performed an award search a couple of days before the promotion went live and then compared it to the same search performed today (after the promotion went live).

As you should be able to see from the image above, the two properties have both had their pre-promotion award costs discounted by 20%, and that’s very good to see.

In further good news (and as was the case in the last sale like this one), it would appear that as long as you commence your award stay by 25 May, you can get the 20% discount for the nights of 26 and 27 May as well so you can actually get 20% off award bookings with a check out date of 28 May as long as the stay commences on the 25th.

I tried this with the InterContinental Los Angeles and as you’ll see if you enlarge the thumbnails below, while the cost of a single award night on 25 May is discounted and the cost of a single award night on 26 May is not discounted, an award booking for the nights of 25, 26, & 27 May *is* discounted and costs just 41,600 per night.

Overall and even though everyone should still be checking the relationship between the cash cost of the room and the cost of an award night before making a booking to make sure that they’re not getting a terrible redemption rate – a 20% discount on the cost of an award night doesn’t guarantee a great redemption rate – my searches have so far shown that there are some very good deals available.

Bottom line

As I said last time this deal was offered, this is one of the best promotions that I’ve seen IHG has run so if you have some points that you’d like to use or some free night certificates that you’d like to burn, now would be a very good time to see what IHG is offering at cities/locations that you’d like to visit.
