American Express continues to offer two good welcome bonuses on two of the best cash back cards that it issues – the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express (review) and the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express (review) – and as it’s currently giving new applicants 6 months (instead of 3) in which to lock in these offers, these cards are worth a closer look.

I’ve reviewed both of these cards in detail (links to the reviews can be found in this article) so this is just a post to highlight the good welcome offers and the key reasons these two cards can be incredibly useful across a variety of wallets.

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

The welcome offer

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card comes with a $95 annual fee (rates & fees) but the current offer that American Express is running sees the annual fee waived for the first year of card membership.

The current welcome offer on the Blue Cash Preferred® Card is for a $250 statement credit after a new cardholder spends $3,000 on their card within 6 months of opening their new account.

Note: The welcome bonus is only available to applicants who have not held this card before.

The card’s earnings rates (terms apply)

  • 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 spending per year*
  • 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions
  • 3% cash back on transit spending (e.g. taxis/Uber/Lyft, parking tolls, trains, buses)
  • 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations
  • 1% cash back on all other eligible spending

*Any spending above $6,000 will earn 1% cashback

Note: Cashback is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit.

Why this is a great card

  • There’s no annual fee in the first year so new applicants can try out this fantastic credit card without spending a dime.
  • Some could see the welcome offer of $250 as being, effectively, free cash as the card currently doesn’t charge an annual fee in the first year and as long as the cardholder doesn’t carry a balance or miss a payment in that year, no other fees should be incurred.
  • 6% cash back at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 of spending per year) is a fantastic rate of return and makes the Blue Cash Preferred® Card one of the best credit cards to use at US supermarkets.
  • 6% cash back available on select US streaming services is unmatched by any other US-issued credit card.
  • The 3% cash back that the Blue Cash Preferred® Card earns at gas stations is one of the highest rates of return that any US-issued credit card offers for gas station spending…and there’s no cap on the spending.
  • The 3% cash back on select travel spending makes the Blue Cash Preferred® Card one of the best cash back cards to use for trains, taxis, ridesharing services, tolls and a lot more.

Note: Terms and conditions apply to all of the above

In summary

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is one of the more rewarding cashback cards on the market with its market-leading rebate at U.S supermarkets, market-leading rebate on spending with streaming services, great cash back rates on select travel spending, and great cash back at gas stations too. If you’re someone looking for a strong cash back card or if you’re just someone who prefers to earn statement credits over miles and points, this is probably the card for you.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express

The welcome offer

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express comes with no annual fee (rates & fees) and successful new applicants can receive up to $200 back in statement credits:

  • Earn 20% back (max $150) as a statement credit on purchases when you use your new Card to check out with PayPal in the first 6 months of Card Membership.
  • Earn $100 back as a statement credit after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new Card in the first 6 months of Card Membership.

Note: The current welcome offer is not available to anyone who currently holds this card or who has had this card in the past.

The card’s earnings rates

  • 3% cash back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 in annual purchases*
  • 3% cash back at US gas stations on up to $6,000 in annual purchases*
  • 3% cash back on up to $6,000 of US online retail purchases*
  • 1% cash back on eligible spending in all other categories

*Any spending above $6,000 will earn 1% cashback

Note: Cashback is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit.

Why this is a great card

  • There’s never an annual fee to pay so you can hold and enjoy the benefits of the Blue Cash Everyday® Card for as long as you like and as long as you never carry a balance (and get charged interest) you’ll never have to pay a dime.
  • The good earning rates offered by the Blue Cash Everyday® Card are impressive for a card that never charges an annual fee. More importantly, these earning rates are offered in two key categories where a lot of people usually see significant spending – groceries and gas stations.
  • The 3% cash back the Blue Cash Everyday® Card offers on up to $6,000 of US online retail purchases (terms apply) makes this card unique as no other credit card lists this as one of its bonus categories.

Also, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card offers the following statement credits (terms apply and enrollment may be required):

  • Up to $15 in monthly statement credits* for online meal kit purchases from Home Chef.
  • A $7 monthly statement credit* for spending $13.99 or more (each month) on an eligible Disney Bundle subscription.

A cardholder who maximizes both of these statement credits would get over $260 back on their Disney Bundle and Home Chef spending.

Terms & conditions apply and enrollment may be required for all or some of the above.

In summary

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card doesn’t charge an annual fee, it’s currently offering a very good welcome bonus, and it gives cardholders a very good rate of return for spending made at US supermarkets, gas stations, and select online retailers. As an added bonus it offers cardholders up to $22/month in select statement credits and as with all American Express cards, it gives cardholders access to valuable Amex Offers which can help save yet more money.

Bottom line

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card requires less spending for a welcome offer that’s not hugely different from the offer on the Blue Cash Preferred® Card but as the Preferred Card isn’t charging an annual fee in the first year, it’s almost certainly the card that everyone should be going for.

  1. As always, very helpful posts for your readers, Ziggy – Thank you!!

Question: Are these 2 cards link in any way to AMEX Membership Rewards? Can they be pooled towards Amex MRs for redemption (like in Chase for Freedom Cards with Chase Sapphire Ultimate Rewards Pgm?) I love the Chase Trifecta and would consider similar for Amex if the Blue Cash cards work the same way. Thanks for all you do to inform your readers 🙂

    • Hi Joyce

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, unlike Chase, Amex keeps cash back and points (Membership Rewards) separate so there’s no scope to turn cash back to MR points with these cards. They’re a pure cash back play.

  2. BCP does not state anywhere that the $95 fee is waived the first year. Where is this stated? They do have the APR set to 0% for the first 12 months.

    • For some reason, the affiliate link was not showing the annual fee waived so the links now direct to Amex where the fee waiver is clear.
