Amex has been making moves recently to stem the number of card holders it has almost certainly been hemorrhaging since the likes of Citi and, more recently, Chase introduced premium credit cards to compete with the Amex Platinum Card.

Since 6 October the Amex Platinum personal card offers 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on airfare direct with the airlines or through Amex Travel:

Amex has introduced double rewards points on almost all of its cards for spend at small businesses through the end of the year:

And now Amex is offering Double Membership Reward Points through 30 October 2016 to some of its personal Platinum Card holders:

To check to see if you’re eligible for this offer log in to your Amex account online and scroll down to the offers section – my offer was waiting for me right at the top of the section.

Here are the headline T&Cs:

Get 2X Membership Rewards® points for purchases made using your enrolled Platinum Card® from American Express online or in-store at any location in the US and US territories by 10/30/16. Limit 100,000 Membership Rewards points.

“Get 2X Membership Rewards points” means you will receive one additional Membership Rewards points per dollar spent when using your enrolled Platinum Card in accordance with the terms of this offer.

Limit of 100,000 additional Membership Rewards points earned through this offer per enrolled Card.

These additional points are in addition to any points you would normally receive for purchases on your Card under the terms of your Cardmember Agreement and the Membership Rewards program, including additional points you may earn on each dollar of eligible purchases on the American Express Travel website. Only Card Members who have a U.S.-issued personal Platinum Card from American Express that is not cancelled, are enrolled in the Membership Rewards program at the time of purchase and personally receive this offer are eligible for this offer.

Here’s a pretty important part of the T&Cs (emphasis is mine):

Your enrollment does not extend to any other Cards, including other Platinum Cards from American Express, that may be linked to your account (such as Additional Cards). Offer valid only for purchases made online or at a merchant location in the United States or in any US territory.

i.e authorized users will not earn you bonus points and any foreign spend will not earn you any bonus points.

Bottom Line

This could be useful for spend in categories where none of your other credit cards offers a bonus – 2 Membership Rewards points are generally more valuable than one point/mile in any other major loyalty currency.

I was going to use my Chase British Airways Visa for an upcoming purchase through the Apple store as I wanted to take advantage of the bonus that card is currently offering…but two Membership Rewards points are worth more to me than two Avios so I can see that spend going on my Amex Platinum Card.
