It’s a Monday, it’s the first Monday of a new month and it’s the first Monday of a new year so it’s not surprising to find that Amex has started targeting cardholders for a new series of offers. What is a little surprising is that Amex appears to have launched a number of excellent offers aimed only at Platinum Card holders and only at Platinum Card holders that have had their card for over two months.

I don’t hold a Business Platinum Card so I can’t say if there are any great offers for anyone who holds that particular card, but if you hold a personal Platinum Card that was active on 1 November 2020, now would be a good time to check your online account to see what you’ve been targeted for.

These are the offers that I’ve seen in my account and that I’ve loaded to my Platinum Card:

All these offers come with their own terms and conditions (make sure you read them carefully if you’ve been targeted) but one of the terms that all of these offers have in common reads as follows:

Offer is available for eligible Card Members with active accounts as of 11/1/2020

If my memory serves me correctly, that date coincides (approximately) with Amex releasing its latest fantastic sign-up offer on the personal Platinum Card so it looks like these offers may be Amex’s way of offering a little “thank you” to those of us who have stuck with the Platinum Card through the current crisis.

Personally, while I’m unlikely to be able to use all of these offers, I’m certainly very happy with what my Platinum Card has been targeted for. The “spend $50 and get $50 back” at Best Buy and Home Depot is essentially free money to me as I’ve no doubt that I would have been spending $50 with those retailers between now and the end of June whether I had received these offers or not, the “save $75 twice” that I can get from Avis is interesting as it will probably tempt me to book away from Hertz for my next two rentals, and I’ll probably end up checking out Instacart too as its targeted offer is based on cumulative spend and does not require the spending to be made in one transaction.

Bottom Line

I don’t remember this happening before, but it looks like American Express is targeting longer-standing Platinum Card holders for a series of excellent offers that, used wisely, can be genuine money savers. What’s more, not only are some of these offers genuinely very good, they’re also useful in the current climate and they’re valid for almost six months so they shouldn’t be too hard to use.

Let me know if you’ve been targeted for any offers that I haven’t highlighted above (and that are restricted to people who held a Platinum Card on 1 November 2020).

  1. Hmmm, these offers if I’m correct are a form of cobranded advertising. In other words, the vendor picks up most if not all the cost of the promotion. This is how sales work at grocery stores, as many of the sales are funded by the manufacturer of the product and not the grocery store.
