Yesterday we heard United Airlines tell us all about the extra flying it will be doing from San Francisco next year and today we have American Airlines telling us how it will be expanding in 2019 too…but prepare to be disappointed.

If you thought that United had overhyped its new routes from San Francisco before the official announcement yesterday you’re probably going to be equally disappointed when you see the “18 new routes” American Airlines has announced today – they’re all regional routes.

American Airlines will also be adding more summer flights to two of its European destinations in 2019 but, in the grand scheme of things, I don’t see too may people getting excited over this news.

American Airlines’ New Summer Flights To Europe

Between 6 June and 27 October 2019 American Airline swill offer two more daily flights to Europe out of its Dallas/Ft Worth hub.

New Daily Flight To Paris (CDG)

AA22 DFW 20:30 – 12:45+1 day CDG
AA23 CDG 15:25 – 18:50 DFW

New Daily Flight To Madrid (MAD)

AA156 DFW 20:50 – 13:05+1 day MAD
AA157 MAD 16:55 – 20:20 DFW

Both new flights to Europe will be operated by American’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners offering the following cabin configuration:

  • 30 Business Class seat
  • 20 Premium Economy seats
  • 36 Main Cabin Extra seats
  • 198 Economy Class seats

The Business Class seats on this aircraft are pretty good….

…and the Premium Economy seats are ok too….

…but the regular Economy Class seats can be as narrow as 16″ (in the exit rows) and all only offer 31″ of seat pitch (leg room) which is tight.

Bottom Line

I’m sure that some of the new regional routes American has just announced will be useful to some people (otherwise why would American be starting them up) but as routes like Dallas – Kalispell don’t do very much for me I’m having trouble generating any excitement for this news.

The new summer flights to/from Europe will be useful for some and may even help to keep transatlantic airfares at reasonable level but they’re not really a major announcement are they?

At the time of writing neither of the two new European flights are available to book yet so it will be interesting to see if American releases any saver award seats when they’re finally loaded into the reservation systems…..I’m not holding my breath.

Any readers particularly happy with any part of this announcement or are you finding it as uninspiring as I am?
