American Airlines’ 777-300ER is its flagship aircraft. It’s the aircraft that signalled the beginning of American Airline’s journey into the 21st century….albeit a few years later than a lot of other carriers.

Up until now American has reserved use of the 777-300ER aircraft for long-haul routes to destinations like Hong Kong and London so, if you’re not big on international travel, you haven’t really had much chance to try the aircraft out. But, for a short period of time, that’s about to change.

American Airlines is to deploy a 777-300ER on the LAX-MIA route between 17 December and 4 January. [Edited 8 Oct – This thread on Flyertalk is suggesting that the 777-300ER may stay on this route longer]

The flight schedule for the aircraft will be as follows:

AA252 LAX 09:00 – 16:47 MIA 77W – Daily
AA1065 MIA 17:00 – 19:44 LAX 77W – Saturday & Sunday service only
AA1248 MIA 17:00 – 19:44 LAX 77W – Monday through Friday Service only

The Aircraft

While the economy cabin is absolutely nothing to get excited about (10-across seating in the non-MCE section makes it extremely tight and I would actively book away from this aircraft if flying in Economy) the business class cabin is a different story.

With a 1-2-1 configuration the cabin is very spacious and with every seat having access to the aisle there’s no need to bother a fellow passenger when you need to get up to stretch your legs or use the restrooms.

The first class cabin is one of the smaller cabins around with just 8 seats in a 1-2-1 formation across 2 rows.

I reviewed the business class product earlier in the year (albeit on a long-haul flight) and the post is HERE.

Cost and Award Availability

As things stand I can’t see any Mile SAAver Business Class or First Class awards on the 777-300ER but, as the flight is only newly loaded into the system, that may change over the next few days.

If Miles SAAver Awards were to become available Business Class would set you back 25,000 AAdvantage miles with First Class costing 32,500 AAdvantage miles (each way).

It’s difficult to ascertain from AA.com if the flights are being sold as a 2-class or 3-class flights.

Picking a random date in December shows the MIA-LAX flight as only available to book in Economy or First Class (other randomly selected dates showed the same thing):

…and with 50+ seats in the business class cabin I highly doubt that business class is sold out.

Picking another random date in December, this time for a departure from LAX, shows business class as available but no first class availability….

Nevertheless, the lowest one-way price, in a premium cabin, that I’ve found so far is $630 but I’ll keep an eye on AA.com over the next few days to see if things change.

If you’re just looking to try out a premium cabin in the 777-300ER things are look g a bit expensive right now. But don’t be put off just yet. We’re always being told that demand for premium class travel drops significantly during the holidays so, hopefully, some award availability will appear and/or prices will drop.
