American Airlines has posted a truly fantastic Business Class fare for travel from Paris Charles De Gaulle to New York JFK. At $1,223 round trip this fare is cheaper than a lot of summer Economy Class fares across the Atlantic and is a great example of why I believe that, if you can be flexible with your travel plans, you can get away without having a large mileage balance and still travel in comfort.

Finding the Fare:

I still like to use the ITA Matrix search tool to find fares like this and the screenshot below shows the search parameters you can use to find this particular deal (change the dates and number of nights to suit your preferences):

Fare Rules:

There’s nothing complicated about the main fare rules for this particular deal:

  • Book by 19 June 2016
  • Travel between now and 31 October 2016
  • Must stay a Saturday night
  • Stopovers not permitted on this fare.

Availability:

Availability for this fare is fantastic!

It starts off great in June…..

June

…and carries on in the same vein in July……

July

…August…..

August

….September….

September

…and October….

October

That’s really amazing availability with the only restriction that you have to stay a Saturday night.

And, yes, the fares are very real. Here’s a screenshot from American Airlines – note the cabin class designation as “Business Class”.

Be Careful!

There are a few flights between Paris and New York on which this fare will work and you need to be careful that you’re booking ones that give you the best value for money.

What do I mean by that?

I mean that you need to pay attention to what aircraft you’re booking. American Airlines operates both Boeing 767 aircraft….

767

…and Boeing 757 aircraft on this route…..

757

…..and while the price is the same whichever you travel on, the 767 will be a far more comfortable experience.

I confess to not being entirely enamoured with this Business class cabin (I reviewed it here) but at $1,223 it’s still a fantastic deal and considerably better than traveling at the back of the plane.

It’s worth pointing out that this deal is also available on British Airways Openskies flights between Paris Orly and New York….

….so, if you prefer the open skies BizBed this could be an option for you.

Mileage Earning

As always you can credit your flights to any of the OneWorld rewards programs but be aware that American Airlines will be awarding reward miles at vastly reduced rates from 1 August.

For flights taken before 1 August and credited to American Airlines AAdvantage, travelers will earn:

  • 7,236 AAdvantage miles (the distance of the round trip flights)
  • Cabin bonus of 1,809 miles
  • An elite status bonus of 25%/100%/100% of distance flown for Gold/Platinum/ Executive Platinum status holders.

An Executive Platinum member will earn 16,281 AAdvantage Miles

For flights taken after 1 August 2016 and credited to American Airlines AAdvantage, travelers will earn AAdvantage miles based on the base price + carrier imposed fees multiplied by the status multiplier 5/7/8/11 for no status/Gold/Platinum/Executive Platinum.

This is the fare breakdown:

In the case of this fare an Executive Platinum member will earn 11,590 AAdvantage Miles – (649 +404.60) x 11

So, if you’re flexible as to when you can fly….fly before 1 August 2016!

Flyers crediting to the British Airways Executive Club will earn 280 Tier Points for the round trip and a minimum of 9,088 Avios (if you have no status) up to 16,358 Avios if you have British Airways Gold status.
