Hilton has launched a new points sale only this time around the hotelier is doing things a little differently and, when you take a look at the rules, you’ll see why it may be a good idea to act sooner rather than later if this deal suits you.

Hilton Honors Point Sale

Most Hilton points sales follow a very similar pattern and, generally speaking, they follow very similar rules to a lot of the other points and miles sale we see.

This time things are different. This time Hilton is only offering Hilton Honors members the chance to buy a points package rather than the usual range of points that these sales normally offer.

The points package on offer is as follows…

  • Buy 40,000 & get 40,000 bonus points for $400

….and Hilton Honors members can buy a maximum of two such packages.

Essentially Hilton is selling its currency at just 0.5 cents per point.

Headline Terms & Conditions

  1. Points purchased do not count towards elite tier qualification.
  2. Points.com and Hilton Honors reserve the right to terminate bonus promotions at any time.
  3. All purchases must be made through the Purchase page on HiltonHonors.com.

  6. Members may purchase a maximum of 2 (two) 40,000 Points packages during this promotion outside the 80,000 maximum points purchase limit per calendar year.
  7. All purchases are non-refundable.
  8. Offer is subject to change.
  9. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer.

Should You Buy Hilton Points At 0.5 Cents Each?

0.5 cents is the cheapest rate at which we usually see Hilton points being sold so if this offer doesn’t work for you (which it may not) there isn’t another offer that we’ve seen that’s going to improve things for you (at least not in recent times).

I value Hilton points at around 0.4 cents each so you may be expecting me to say that this is a deal everyone should be staying away from…but that’s not what I’m going to say.

If you’re planning on buying points just to stockpile them then that’s a fundamentally bad idea but there’s definitely value to be had here if you know what you’re doing.

Take the Conrad New York Downtown as an example.

On a random night in October the cheapest room at this property currently costs $603 + taxes or 80,000 Hilton Honors points:

$603 + taxes comes to $697.92 for the night:

In the current sale the 80,000 points needed to book this award would set you back $400 which would save you almost $300 on the best available cash rate.

The properties don’t all have to be high-end to make the math work and the savings don’t have to be huge…take the Beverly Hilton for example.

A randomly selected night here currently costs $287 + taxes or 60,000 Hilton Honors points:

$287 + taxes comes to $333.74 for the night…

…while the 60,000 points needed to book the same room on the same night would cost just $300 saving you $33.

Bottom Line

Please remember that the hotels I’ve discussed above are just examples so there may be cheaper properties available on the same nights that suit you just as well which would make using points for these nights a bad idea….but that doesn’t make the deals I’ve highlighted bad.

Also, bear in mind that Hilton says that it’s only selling 7,000 of these packages so there’s a possibility that the packages will run out before this promotion closes on 4 July – if this deal looks like it works for you don’t procrastinate for too long.

The most important things to do here are the following:

  1. Work out what you’d like to do with your points, where you’d like to visit and when
  2. Perform similar calculations to the ones I’ve shown above.

If the math works then buying points in this promotion is probably a good idea (go for it), if not then you should move on.

If you only need a few more thousand points (to add to your existing Hilton Honors points balance) for an award you’ve been looking to book then paying a little more for the points than you would otherwise be happy to pay would also be ok….just don’t go crazy.

  1. Why act quickly? Hilton points are frequently sold at this price. No reason to rush unless you are just dying to get in before the next devaluation.

    • The words “when you take a look at the rules, you’ll see why it may be a good idea to act sooner rather than later if this deal suits you” are used in the opening paragraph and the key words there are “if this deal suits you”.

So, to answer your question, people should act quickly if this deal suits them because it may end abruptly and without notice.

  2. I basically agree with Gene. Hilton is so devalued that I’d say these are worth 2 to 3 cents each for the average Hilton property. Like any program, you can get outsized value if you work hard enough so like most points/miles buying deals it’s only worth it if you have a specific redemption in mind which is what you are basically saying.

  3. Will these points expire? When I wanted to use my points racked up on a 3 week trip in 2012. They had expired when I finally wanted to go somewhere to use them..bummer! I don’t travel often but like to stay at Hilton properties when I do.. AND why is it so hard to use the points? You have to somehow specify you want to use your points when making reservations. I haven’t been successful doing that and you can’t use them when checking out….Ticks me off!

  4. The points will expire if you don’t earn or use any points in a 12 month period.

You have to specify you want to use points in a reservation (and can’t use points on checkout) because award night availability is separate to availability for a cash rate.
